Art Lumolith 2007/2008
„Lighthenge“
This season, the Lumolith will be orchestrated by the artist collective Optickle (Berne). The name, Lumolith, alluding to the prehistoric megalith culture, inspired Optickle to design an installation in the form of an interactive calendar, an observatory or a clock, echoing structures such as Stonehenge. The collective will transform the Lumolith into a chronograph, and the tower will become a clock tower. The architectural structure of the tower will become a display on which the colour and the movement of the light will indicate the time.
The functioning of the chronograph
Light programs will show the time using rhythms, patterns and colours. Like a bell tower, the Lumolith will “ring” every quarter of an hour one to three times and it will “play” a carillon on every full hour, followed by the stroke of the hour. Sounds will be translated visually.
The seconds set the basic rhythm. The speed and the complexity increase towards the end of every quarter of an hour. The following period starts slowly and simply again. Each quarter of an hour forms a rhythmical entity with its own tension curve. The position within the quarter will be apparent.
Inside each quarter of an hour, the colours of the programs will change within a given colour spectrum defined by the relevant segment of the chromatic circle. The spectator can thus read the time by identifying the position within a given hour and within a given quarter.
The current hour is shown after every minute as a black and white pattern.
